Believing in Creation

Believing in Creation

So far, we have studied God’s works in eternity—what He planned to do before the foundation of the world. But God is very active in time and history. His first great work in time is creation.

There is much controversy between “science” and “religion” about creation. Many deny creation altogether. Others admit that there is a kind of Designer behind the universe, but they deny that the Creator is the God of the Bible. Scripture declares, “In the beginning God created the heaven and the earth” (Genesis 1:1).

I do not expect to convince you that God is the Creator if you are an unbeliever. By definition, an unbeliever cannot understand the concept of creation. An unbeliever and a believer have different starting points or presuppositions. An unbeliever is like a man who finds a beautiful house. He starts examining the bricks and mortar, and ignores the fact that the architect of the house has left a guide to the construction of the house on the kitchen table. He concludes that the house came into existence over a long period of time by natural processes, all the while ignoring the testimony of the builder and architect. The universe—with the myriads of living things on the earth—is staggeringly complex, much more than any manmade house. “For every house is builded by some man, but He that built all things is God” (Hebrews 3:4).

God issues a challenge to the unbeliever: “Where wast thou when I laid the foundations of the earth? Declare if thou hast understanding” (Job 38:4). “Lift up your eyes on high, and behold who hath created these things” (Isaiah 40:26). “Hast thou not known? Hast thou not heard, that the everlasting God, the LORD, the Creator the ends of the earth, fainteth not, neither is weary? There is no searching of His understanding” (Isaiah 40:28). No man, no matter how intelligent, no matter how many PhDs he has to his name, was there—no man can fathom the origin of the universe, and no man can demonstrate where life came from.

Only faith can embrace the truth of creation: “Through faith we understand that the worlds were framed by the word of God, so that things which are seen were not made of things which do appear” (Hebrews 11:3).

Worship your Creator. That is the chief duty of man.
