Quotes to Consider
William Hendrickson: “Sin, being a destructive force, must not be pampered. It must be put to death. Temptation should be flung aside immediately and decisively. Dillydallying is deadly. Halfway measures work havoc. The surgery must be radical. Right at this moment and without any vacillation the obscene book should be burned, the scandalous picture destroyed, the soul-destroying sin condemned, the sinister yet very intimate social tie broken, and the baneful habit discarded. In the struggle against sin the believer must fight hard. Shadow boxing will never do” (Commentary on Matthew, p. 303).
Herman Hoeksema: “[Conversion’s] beginning may be either very sudden and striking, so that you can point to the place and the hour when this wonder of grace was first performed on your soul, or it may be gradual and unnoticeable, bound up in the early years of your childhood, so that you cannot at all remember that you ever were converted. The former is usually the case with those that live in ways of gross sin until they have reached the age of maturity. God suddenly stops them in their pursuit of sin, and turns them radically about. The latter naturally occurs when we are instructed in the truth of the gospel from infancy, learn to say our prayers on mother’s lap, never depart from the fear of the Lord, but walk in His way from childhood. It should also be remarked that the latter is far preferable to the former, and he that can mention the date and the place of his conversion has nothing to boast because of it” (Triple Knowledge, 3:102).
Ursinus: “The repentance of the godly differs from that of the ungodly as it respects the efficient cause of it. The repentance of the ungodly proceeds from distrust and despair, so that their disquietude and hatred to God increase. The repentance of the godly, however, proceeds from faith, or the confidence which they have in the mercy of God, and in a gracious reconciliation with Him by and for the sake of Christ” (Commentary on the Heidelberg Catechism, p. 476).
Martyn Lloyd-Jones: “Morbid scrupulosity is always concerned about itself, its state and condition, and its own achievements. True holiness, on the other hand, is always concerned about pleasing God, glorifying Him and ministering to the glory of Jesus Christ. If you and I keep that ever in the foreground of our minds we need not be very worried about becoming morbid. All that will be at once avoided if we do it for His sake, instead of spending the whole of our time feeling our spiritual pulse and taking our spiritual temperature” (Studies in the Sermon on the Mount, vol. I, p. 250).
